the artists – a legacy in their own right

graffiti: what started in the middle of the 20th century, is in a continuous state of transformation; only affirming art’s ability to acclimate and the artists ability to illustrate each metamorphosis of their cities. a burgeoning metropolis stands before them, sprawling with life and possibilities; like a blank slate that beckons to become a masterpiece.

My art is a fusion of life and imagination. I take graffiti and morph it with fine art ,combine it with an underlying message. This allows me to reach a wide variety of people. The image relates more to youth, the message to adults. My design pulls them together bringing them to the middle ground to which they relate.

I am about my message. My art is my voice, my protest , agreement, whisper, shout and cry. “To see my artwork is to see me to understand my artwork is to think about the message it conveys. This is my life…”

Maria “TOOFLY” Castillo

Toofly’s journey into the world of art began with her commute to public school from her Corona, Queens neighborhood. Her trips were filled with adventurous sketches as she immersed herself in the myriad of graffiti tags, fill-ins, and outlines viewed on almost every deconstructive surface along the way. It was precisely the rebellious artistic spirit of the 90’s street graffiti movement that drove Toofly to join its subculture ranks.

Alice “AM” Mizrachi

Alice Mizrachi is an artist, curator, social entrepreneur, educator and community organizer. Born and raised in Queens, New York, she has long been an active part of the art community near and outside her home town. Since her graduation from ParsonsSchool of Design in 1999, she has exhibited her works in galleries worldwide, such as Powerhouse in NYC, Colette in Paris, Lab 101 in L.A and Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis to name a few. Her works reflect a nostalgia for a city that once was- an urban subculture, gritty and thriving through a variety of buildings woven together as a colorful luminouscityscape; sometimes vibrant but always invoking a hidden tranquility. While educating today’s youth in central Harlem as an art teacher, she is also keeping busy as a co-founder of the YOUNITY Arts Collective. Alice is not only known for her excellence as an artist and educator, but also for her passion in uniting female artists and entrepreneurs through YOUNITY.
