From the art of aerosol legends like Dondi White and TAKI 183 to dope trendsetters like Krink, urban art, street culture and city life have gone hand in hand. the meaning of “urban” has expanded its text book definition, but creating something out of something already established by industry and corporation is how inner city youth have been taking back their domain since the first graffiti writer sprawled his pen name across the sides of buildings in the late 1960’s

today, urban youth are still making their indelible mark on society, with what’s been newly deemed as “street art” by non artists who wish to civilize this past time; nonetheless, it’s still graffiti. although graffiti is becoming more widely accepted as a classical form of art; it’s being used more in design schemes and advertising and more artists are being commissioned to create wall murals that resemble graffiti, something has changed with street art by which mainstream art seems to claim it as their own. mainstreaming graffiti won’t steal away its magic, but it threatens to take away its mystery and the power of inner city youth to own their own voice, their urban medium …
